An airway screening is a simple evaluation that assesses how well a child breathes – especially during sleep. Dentists trained in airway-focused dentistry examine the mouth, jaw development, tongue posture, and breathing patterns to determine if the airway may be restricted.

During growth years, the jaws and facial bones are still developing, which means early intervention can help encourage proper development.

If your child snores, breathes through their mouth, or wakes up tired even after a full night of sleep, you may be witnessing signs of an airway problem, not just a quirky sleep habit. At Atkins & Anderson DDS in College Station, we are proud to now offer airway dentistry as part of our commitment to whole-health care for patients of all ages. And for families with young children, our airway dentistry for kids program (designed specifically for children ages 3-12) could be a game-changer for your child’s development, sleep, and long-term health.

Treating the Root Cause, Not Just the Symptoms

What sets airway dentistry apart from conventional dental and orthodontic care is its focus on the underlying cause of many common childhood health complaints. At Atkins & Anderson, we believe in treating the source of a problem rather than simply managing its symptoms.

Underdeveloped jaws are at the root of many airway problems. When the jaw doesn’t grow properly, there isn’t enough space for the tongue, which can collapse backward during sleep and restrict the airway. This is why snoring, sleep apnea, mouth breathing, TMJ pain, and even chronic headaches are all connected to jaw development. By guiding proper jaw growth early in life, we address the structural cause of these issues, leading to deeper, more lasting results.

Signs Your Child May Benefit from Airway Dentistry for Kids

Here are some of the signs that may indicate your child has an airway concern worth evaluating:

ADHD or ADHD Tendencies

Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep

Mouth breathing (especially during the day or while resting)

Restless sleep, frequent tossing and turning

Dark circles under the eyes

Daytime tiredness or difficulty waking up

Bedwetting beyond typical developmental age

Speech concerns or delayed speech development

Crowded or crooked teeth developing early

Chronic allergies, ear infections, or enlarged tonsils/adenoids

Frequent nightmares, or night terrors

Delayed growth

If your child is experiencing several of these symptoms, it doesn’t necessarily mean they have a serious condition, but it would be worth having an evaluation. Many of these signs indicate that a child isn’t getting quality, restorative sleep, and the long-term effects of chronic poor sleep on a growing child can be significant.

How Airway Dentistry for Kids Works at Atkins & Anderson

Our process is designed to be simple, supportive, and centered entirely around your child’s comfort. Here’s what to expect:

Step 1: Comprehensive Evaluation

We begin with a thorough assessment of your child’s breathing, teeth, and jaw development to determine whether airway treatment is appropriate and what approach will serve them best. This evaluation is gentle, non-invasive, and tailored to make your child feel at ease

Step 2: Personalized Treatment Plan

Every child is unique, and so is every treatment plan. We design a customized plan using the right appliance or aligner for your child’s specific growth needs. These small, comfortable devices gently guide jaw growth and create more space for the developing teeth and airway. Like the evaluation, your child’s comfort is our priority. The treatment is safe and non-invasive, and designed to keep your child feel comfortable.

Step 3: Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustments

Airway dentistry for kids is a process, not a one-time fix. We monitor your child’s progress at regular intervals, review any changes, and make small, precise adjustments to keep everything moving smoothly. Our team is with you every step of the way.

Is My Child a Candidate for Airway Dentistry?

Airway dentistry for kids is most effective for children between the ages of 3 and 12, when the jaw and facial bones are still growing they are more responsive to gentle guidance. If your child is in this age range and showing any of the signs listed above, we encourage you to request a consultation.

You don’t need a referral, and the evaluation is a comfortable, low-pressure experience. We’ll take the time to listen to your concerns, assess your child’s development, and walk you through our findings and recommendations. You’ll leave with clarity about whether airway treatment is appropriate, and a roadmap for what comes next if it is.

Airway Dentistry for Kids: Why Ages 3-12 Are So Important

During early childhood, a child’s mouth, jaw, and facial bones are still actively growing and maturing. This means that small, targeted interventions can have an outsized impact. Early airway treatment helps ensure proper jaw alignment, nasal breathing, and healthy facial growth. All of these set the stage for a lifetime of better breathing and better sleep.

Many of the airway problems we see in adults (including obstructive sleep apnea) have their roots in underdeveloped jaws during childhood. When the jaws don’t grow fully, there simply isn’t enough space for the tongue and airway. This can result in snoring, sleep apnea, mouth breathing, TMJ pain, headaches, and a range of developmental concerns. By addressing these issues early, we can treat the source of the problem, not just the symptoms.

What Is Airway Dentistry?

Airway dentistry is a specialized field of dental care that focuses on the relationship between the airway, the jaw, and the teeth. Specifically, how these structures develop together over time. Rather than treating the teeth in isolation, airway dentistry takes a whole-body approach: by improving the function and structure of the airway, we can support better sleep, healthier growth, and improved overall wellness. Many people are surprised to learn that their dentist can play a major role in identifying and treating breathing and sleep issues. But the mouth is the beginning of the airway, and the way the jaw and teeth develop has a direct impact on how freely and effectively a person breathes.

Why We’re Excited to Bring Airway Dentistry to College Station

At Atkins & Anderson, our mission has always been to provide top-tier, patient-centered dentistry for the whole family. Airway dentistry is a natural extension of that mission. We know that healthy teeth and a healthy airway go hand in hand, and we are committed to offering our College Station patients the most forward-thinking, evidence-based care available.

We are especially passionate about our airway dentistry for kids program. The early childhood years (roughly ages 3-12) are a critical window for jaw and airway development. Identifying and addressing airway issues during this time can have profound, lifelong benefits that significantly more difficult to attain if treatment is delayed until later in life.

The Connection Between Airway Health and Children’s Sleep

A healthy airway allows your child to breathe easily and quietly while they sleep. But when the airway is narrow or partially blocked, the body must work harder to keep oxygen flowing. This can cause:

This type of interrupted sleep is often linked to pediatric sleep-disordered breathing, one of the most overlooked causes of poor sleep in children.

Why Airway Problems Can Lead to Nightmares

When a child’s airway isn’t open enough during sleep, the brain may sense a drop in oxygen. This can trigger:

Scary or stressful dreams

Night terrors

For many children, these “nightmares” are actually the body’s response to struggling to breathe. If your child consistently has bad dreams, waking episodes, or restless sleep, it’s worth considering whether an airway issue is the cause.

Many parents are surprised to learn that dentists are often the first to spot signs of airway issues. Because the airway is closely connected to the jaws, tongue, and oral structures, changes in breathing often show up in the mouth first.

Here are five everyday clues that may indicate your child has an airway issue – and why early intervention is essential.

5 Common Signs Your Child May Have an Airway Issue

Mouth Breathing

A child who consistently breathes through their mouth instead of their nose, whether awake or asleep, may have an airway issue. Mouth breathing can affect jaw alignment and facial development. It can also lead to dental problems, dry mouth, and other oral health issues.

Learn More: Mouth Breathing vs Nasal Breathing: What’s the Big Difference?

Snoring or Gasping During Sleep

Noisy breathing during sleep, along with snorting, gasping, or pauses in breathing, can signal an airway obstruction. If your child frequently snores or experiences restless sleep, they may not be getting the oxygen they need throughout the night. If your child seems easily fatigued or struggles to stay focused, their breathing could be a contributing factor.

Behavioral Issues

When children don’t get enough quality sleep, it impacts their behavior. Studies show that children with restless and disrupted sleep may show symptoms similar to ADHD, including difficulty focusing, hyperactivity, and irritability. Correcting airway issues helps improve sleep quality, leading to better behavior and emotional regulation.

Crowded Teeth or Crossbite

A narrow jaw or palate, crowded teeth, and crossbites are red flags of an airway issue. Crowded teeth or misaligned jaws narrow the airway, leading to mouth breathing and snoring. The lack of space for the tongue pushes it back and obstructs the airway, especially during sleep.

Facial Development Concerns

Facial development is often related to oral and airway health, so pay attention to changes in your child’s facial structure.

Why Early Intervention is Essential

Early intervention is essential for airway dentistry because your child’s mouth, teeth, and jaw are still developing, which means small adjustments can make a big difference. Early treatment helps correct jaw and facial development, leading to a healthier airway, better sleep, improved behavior, and a reduced risk of chronic conditions.

Correcting issues when your child is young is also less invasive and more effective than waiting until they’re older, helping to avoid the need for more complex or extensive treatments later.

So, how do you keep your family’s teeth healthy during a holiday filled with chocolate bunnies and marshmallow chicks?

In this post, Atkins & Anderson DDS shares four ways to enjoy this special holiday – and still protect your family’s teeth this Easter season.

1. Eat sweet treats after meals.

Grazing on sweet treats throughout the day coats teeth in sugar and puts them under constant attack by acid-producing bacteria, increasing the risk of cavities and tooth decay.

When you eat, your mouth produces saliva containing minerals and proteins that protect your tooth enamel and help prevent cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease. We recommend eating sweet treats after meals when your mouth is already producing saliva and is better equipped to fight a sugar-induced acid attack.

2. Drink plenty of water.

We all know water keeps your body hydrated. But did you know it also keeps your mouth healthy? Drinking water after each meal, snack, or sweet treat helps wash away food particles and sugar from your teeth. It also helps prevent bacterial growth that can lead to tooth decay.

3. Brush and floss daily.

Aim to brush your teeth thoroughly for two minutes every morning and night with fluoride toothpaste. Avoid rinsing after brushing your teeth to prevent the protective fluoride from being washed away.

Use dental floss or interdental brushes daily to remove the sticky plaque between your teeth. It’s also important to supervise children’s brushing and ensure that every family member brushes their teeth thoroughly before bed – even during the Easter holidays!

4. Replace your toothbrush every three months.

Your toothbrush may look new, but it’s actually full of bacteria. One helpful way to remember is to get a new toothbrush for every family member at the beginning of each season. Adding a new toothbrush to Easter baskets is a fun and healthy tradition!

Happy Easter from Atkins & Anderson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry

Practice these four tips for healthy teeth and gums at Easter and throughout the year. Regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments will also keep your teeth healthy and your smile bright.

How can I keep my toddler’s teeth healthy? When should I schedule the first checkup?

These are just a few of the questions parents have about their child’s dental care. You know you want to prevent cavities, but what’s the best way?

Here are some tips and guidelines to help you keep your child’s teeth healthy from birth:

Birth to First Tooth

Did you know infants are born with their entire set of 20 primary teeth already below the gum line? That’s why it’s important to think about dental care before the first tooth even comes in.

Gently wipe your baby’s gums with a clean damp washcloth or gauze pad after every feeding. Finish bottle feedings before putting your baby down to sleep.

Avoid putting pacifiers or feeding spoons in your mouth because you can pass cavity-causing germs to your baby. Instead, rinse pacifiers with water to clean them.

1st Tooth to 12 Months

The first tooth usually emerges when a baby is 6-8 months old. After the first tooth appears, lightly brush your baby’s teeth and gums with a soft-bristled toothbrush but no toothpaste. At this stage, you should schedule the first dental appointment. The AAPD recommends seeing a dentist by your baby’s first birthday.

12 to 24 Months

Continue brushing your child’s teeth twice daily with plain water only. Make a dentist appointment if you notice any irregular brown or white spots, which can indicate tooth decay.

2 – 8 Years

Around the age of 2 years, begin brushing your child’s teeth twice daily using a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste. Teach your child to spit out all the toothpaste after brushing and not to swallow it.

Toddlers will need help brushing their teeth, but you can let them hold the toothbrush and try brushing them first. After they’ve had a turn, you can finish and make sure their teeth are brushed properly. Once your child has two teeth that touch, you should floss them daily.

Regular checkups every 6 months will help prevent cavities and other dental problems.

You’ll need to help your child until you’re confident they can clean their teeth properly by themselves. Every child is different, but most need supervision until ages 8-10.

What’s the best way to brush your child’s teeth?

1. Stand or sit behind your child so they feel secure. Brush teeth in front of a mirror so they can watch and learn – and you can see inside their mouth.

2. Angle the toothbrush bristles towards the gum. If you’re using an electric toothbrush, move the brush gently across the teeth. Move the brush in gentle circles if you’re using a manual toothbrush.

3. Brush the inner and outer sides of the teeth, the chewing surfaces, and the gum line.

4. Gently brush your child’s tongue.

5. After brushing for 2 minutes, encourage your child to spit out the toothpaste, not swallow it. There’s no need to rinse with water after brushing because the fluoride toothpaste left behind helps protect your child’s teeth.

Looking Ahead

As your kids grow and their permanent teeth come in, plan on routine dental checkups every 6 months. Limit sugary foods and encourage proper brushing and flossing to keep your child’s teeth healthy. When added to regular dental visits and a balanced diet, these home treatments will help give your child a lifetime of healthy dental habits. To schedule an appointment, contact Atkins & Anderson DDS today.

Except that this time, it’s a list for back-to-school preparations. School supplies, new shoes, lunchboxes, carpool, schedules, but as the great parent that you are, we’re sure you’ve thought of everything! Or almost, everything. During this busy time, many people forget about the importance of taking care of their children’s dental needs. But the start of the new school year is a great time to revamp your oral care habits and prioritize a healthy mouth. Here are three tips you can do today to get your children (and their teeth) ready for the school year.

Schedule a Dentist Appointment

Did you know that according to a study in 2015, one-third of children miss school due to dental problems? One way to avoid missing school to take care of your child’s oral needs is to schedule an appointment with your dentist now. A routine cleaning and dental exam will alert you of any potential problems before they arise or address any dental needs before make-up work is given to your child. Your dentist may recommend sealants or fluoride treatments to help prevent cavities.

Level Up Their Lunch

When you pack your child’s lunch, you may already limit sugar knowing that too much sugar can lead to cavities. However, most people underestimate salty snacks. Starch in chips and crackers break down into a sticky substance that coats teeth and can lead to decay. Try subbing in nuts for a salty snack and encouraging your children to eat baby carrots and celery sticks when they want something crunchy.

Make Oral Care Fun

To help younger kids get excited about taking care of their teeth, try adding some fun elements to your dental hygiene routine. Create a sticker calendar to help your children keep track of when they brush and floss their teeth each day. Children and adults should brush their teeth twice a day and floss once, preferably in the evening. Another fun idea is to bring some music into the bathroom. Create a playlist of your kids’ favorite songs and have them brush their teeth until the two-minute song is over. Encourage your child to get involved in their dental hygiene by picking out a toothbrush in their favorite color or with their favorite character/theme.

Begin teaching your children the importance of choosing the right snacks, prioritizing their oral hygiene, and scheduling regular dental appointments. If you’re looking for a family dentist you can trust in Bryan/College Station, contact Atkins & Anderson, DDS to schedule a routine cleaning for every member of your family.

They’re just nestled below the gumline until your child is about 6 months old. The teeth begin to come through between 6 to 12 months, and most children have their full set of teeth by the time they are 3 years old. This can be an uncomfortable time for your baby, but there are several things you can do to help alleviate your baby’s pain.

How Do I Know My Baby is Teething?

Here are a few signs that will alert you that your baby is teething. These symptoms are completely normal, but they won’t last forever. So, hang in there!

Fussiness

Difficulty Sleeping

Irritability

Loss of Appetite

Drooling More than Usual

However, the following are not associated with teething. If your child develops these symptoms, call your pediatrician.

Diarrhea

Fever

Rash

How Can I Soothe My Teething Baby?

When the teeth begin to erupt, your child will have sore or tender gums. Try to remember that their sleeplessness and crankiness are simply their way of communicating discomfort. You can help soothe their sore gums by gently rubbing a clean finger, a cool spoon, or a moist gauze pad, over the tops of their gums. You can also give your child a clean teether to chew on. Just be cautious about the teething material you choose. Not all teethers are safe, even if they are marketed as a teether. A solid rubber teether is the safest option. They cannot break like liquid-filled teething rings or plastic teethers.

Are Numbing Gels or Teething Tablets Safe?

The FDA advises parents against numbing gels or products containing benzocaine for children under 2. Benzocaine is an over-the-counter anesthetic under the names Orajel, Baby Orajel, Anbesol, Hurricaine, and Orabase. According to the FDA, “These products carry serious risks, and provide little to no benefits for treating oral pain, including sore gums in infants due to teething.” In fact, benzocaine has been associated with a rare, but sometimes fatal, condition called methemoglobinemia. This is a serious disorder that significantly reduces the amount of oxygen carried through the bloodstream.

Homeopathic teethers are not tested and approved by the FDA, and therefore often have more belladonna, a toxic substance, than is identified on the label. This substance can put your child at unnecessary health risks. If you give your child a homeopathic gel or tablet and he or she has seizures, difficulty breathing, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, constipation, difficulty urinating, or muscle weakness, contact your pediatrician immediately.

While the teething stage can feel long and difficult for both you and your child, remember that it’s just a season! Your happy, good sleeper will return! If you have questions or concerns about your teething baby, contact your dentist or pediatrician. At Atkins & Anderson, DDS, we’re here to give you advice about how to relieve discomfort due to teething or answer any questions you might have about your child’s teeth. Then, when they’re around 3 years old, we’ll be ready to see them!

There’s nothing like a cracked or missing tooth to derail holiday cheer. But accidents do happen. If you or one of your children experience a dental emergency over the holidays, we want you to feel prepared and confident that you’re taking the right steps.

Steps to Take if the Dentist Office is Closed

Step 1: Determine Whether or Not You Have an Emergency.

Sharp pain in your teeth or gums, swollen or sensitive gums, and an inability to speak or eat normally may indicate that you have a dental emergency. An emergency may also occur as a result of trauma to your mouth. Trauma can cause excessive bleeding, a cracked tooth, or a knocked-out tooth. If you experience any of these symptoms and cannot wait until office hours, move on to Step 2.

Step 2: Call the Office

If you are experiencing pain due to trauma or infection, call our office. Our staff will check messages and respond as quickly as possible. If bleeding does not stop, your pain is too severe, or an infection begins to affect your breathing or eating, you may need to go to the ER. In many cases, the ER can only provide antibiotics or ensure an infection is not spreading. If your pain is manageable and the bleeding stops, wait for us to return your call & give you further instructions.

Step 3: Protect the Problem Area

While you wait for an appointment, be careful with the teeth and gums surrounding the problem area. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater, avoid chewing on the side of the problem area, and keep your mouth clean.

If your permanent tooth is knocked out, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk. If possible, put it back in the socket without touching the root.

For a cracked tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and then reduce swelling by holding a cold compress to your face.

If you have a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove debris caught between your teeth.

Steps to Avoid a Dental Emergency

Step 1: Be Careful When Eating

Be careful when eating popcorn, chewing ice, or eating hard candies. Use this holiday season to teach your kids about eating carefully and avoid crunching down on candy canes and peanut brittle. Limit your sugar intake, and remember to brush and floss after consuming sweet treats to reduce your risk of cavities.

Step 2: Always Use Scissors

Yes, your jaw is very strong, but you don’t have to prove it by tearing open a package with your teeth. A chipped or broken tooth is a big price to pay when scissors are within reach.

We recommended having scissors ready Christmas morning so that no one is tempted to cut anything with their teeth.

Step 3: Take Care of Your Teeth

Late-night snacks, festive parties, and rich indulgences seem to go hand in hand with holidays. We don’t want to be Scrooge, we just want to remind you to brush and floss your teeth twice a day and put simple practices in action so that your mouth stays healthy.

We hope that your Christmas holiday is not interrupted by a dental emergency, but if an accident happens, contact Atkins and Anderson, DDS immediately.
